Take a Day Off!! 2011

For the third year in a row, we have take a day off on the Mississippi River. This is an event!

Every year we have held a large event with many little events sponsored by the Stearns County Soil & Water Conservation, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and many other organizations.

The smaller events have been like shoreline fishing, canoeing, birds of prey demonstration, laser shooting, geocaching (our favorite) and many others.

I have setup and organized the geocaching portion of the event. This has always been a large task but has gone very well with a long, tiring day.

This year I had asked someone to camp overnight the night before to assist in watching over the stuff. The camping portion was not that great.

Everything was a lot of fun and the food was great! And then it started to rain. The rain was not bad, we had a brand new tent from Walmart. Apparently the “Ever-Dry” tent made you wish that you would ever be dry. This tent leaked at EVERY seam. Now a new tent? So, I pulled out the manual and it seems that this is a trick to purchase seam sealer! They said that if you have any leaks just use that to seal them. What do you do if it is a new tent and EVERY seam is leaking?

Then as a result of the night of rain and the leaking tent and bailing out water, we over slept. So, I had to rush to get everything setup. It was not a lot of work, but we did have a lot to do for only two people. I was the only one that had done this event before… which means I have to explain it to everyone else, more time.

Well the day went very smooth. Someone stole a couple caches, oh well. Another year down!

Wow! Thanks to all the volunteers!!
